Darlene Liew May Wan – Gold

ACE Certified Personal Trainer

“5 years ago, I started working-out on my own & I enjoyed it ever since. About 2 years ago, I decided it was time to change my life. I approached 30 & had reached a stage where I was no longer content to let each day tick by, I wanted to do something that excites me. This uncontented feeling finally drew me to a decision to ditch my corporate career. Thereafter, I started my own recruitment firm so that I could have more time to pursue my career in personal training. My income was bound to plummet, in the short term at least, and I would have to build a career all over again. But fitness is something I love, nothing else compared. I wanted to do something I am passionate about and that’s fitness. When I was younger I was always active. I would do team sports 4 – 5 times a week. But when I was working, it was different. I no longer had the spare time to do all these or go to the gym as often as I wanted.

I passed my ACE exam recently and found a career I love, I am also able to focus more on my own training. Moreover, I found a lifestyle that suits me. I am so happy and I love it. I am doing well as  a personal trainer and I love the freedom of the job as well as the chance to make the difference to people’s lives. Being someone’s inspiration is really good for job satisfaction. It is not just about me following my dreams, I am helping someone with theirs too. In my opinion; it is the perfect job, more like a hobby. 2 years ago was a major jump and a complete change in lifestyle financially. But money is not everything and if you do something you enjoy, you will be good at it andif you are good at it, the money will come.

Nutrition is vital, and for me specifically the timing of meals is paramount.

I have a clean diet. I eat 6 – 8 meals daily. Oats for breakfast, nuts together with eggs & Omega-3. Lunch and dinner consist of lean protein, brown rice & lots of green vegetables. In between meals I add protein shakes, wholemeal bread & fruits. I don’t drink alcohol. I am often asked lots of questions regarding supplements. However, I mainly rely on natural food, high protein, good fats and carbs.

I train 6 out of 7 days. My training is very much back to basics and based around traditional exercises such as chest –presses, shoulder-presses, etc. I always begin my session with compound moves that requires heavy weights to induce micro-trauma and stimulate hypertrophy. You need to lift heavy in order to get stronger. At times, I add super-sets and dropsets, less rest and shorter but more intense sessions. I also focus on shaping exercises and cardio to bring out details. I love running. I enjoy long runs and sprinting for power and speed toward the end of the runs. I also add hill runs into my training.”
