Miss Malaysia Fitness 1st runner up, Personal Trainer, Fitness Manager, Dance Instructor, Pet Groomer … FIT student Amie Kwa wears many hats !!!

FIT : So, you were Miss Malaysia Fitness 1st runner up. Tell us about your competing experience :-
Amie: This was during the time I worked at Sweat Club Megamall ( now Celebrity Fitness ) I took part in the Miss Malaysia Fitness 2004 competition for fun and surprised myself by getting first runner up and winning the subsidiary title of Miss Body Beautiful.
After that I got hooked and joined the Miss Asia Pacific Fitness Woman Championship where I placed 4th runner up.

** Note to our readers that these competitions are no longer held sadly. Maybe its time for a comeback seeing the increase in fitness participation amongst females. Any potential organizers up for it ?? **

FIT : So tell us how you got started in the fitness industry.
Amie : My background is actually in finance ! I graduated from UTM with a degree in Management and a major in Accounting. I was working in the finance department with a big corporation and got bored. I saw a newspaper ad for a fitness position with Sweat Club and thought it would be a “cooler” job. Since then, I’ve worked as a personal trainer, in event management for fitness events, took up group fitness(Amie teaches BodyJam, BodyStep and also freestyle classes ) and worked in club management.

FIT : We understand you took a break from fitness and pursued … pet grooming ! What’s that about ?
Amie : Haha ! Apart from fitness, my other great love is for animals !
( Amie has a much adored American cocker spaniel Jojo! )
I did a course and became an Internationally Certified Groomer.
I decided to try out a different career path, so I opened a pet grooming shop along with a business partner.

FIT : Why did you come back to fitness then ?
Amie : Well, I don’t regret the break, but I did discover that fitness is still my first love !

FIT : Amie, you’ve taken the ACE Personal Trainer exam before in 2007 by doing self study. Why did you decide to take the ACE Personal Trainer course with FIT this time around ?
Amie : The first time I got certified was in 2007. I took the ACE Personal Trainer exam but did self study. Then … I didn’t update my CECs as I was pre-occupied with my career switch ( into pet grooming ). When I wanted to re-enter the fitness industry, I realized that so much had changed. So many new things in fitness such as kettlebell, suspension training ( RIP 60, TRX ), trigger point …. I felt that I should take the course in order to update myself with all the new findings in fitness.
A good example is that back in 2007, there was no IFT model in the ACE Personal Trainer certification.
I really enjoyed the course as it reinforced many facts, strengthened my knowledge, covered new ground and I also made great new friends.

FIT : Lastly, have you set any goals for the brand new year, 2013 ?
Amie : Well, everything in my life will be new ! I will be getting married, moving into a new house and switching careers ! So, I will have a brand new life in 2013 !

*Amie’s new career is still in fitness but in a different mode. Stay tuned to www.old.fit.com.my if you want to know what Amie will be doing !
