FIT: Hi Jiten, nice to meet you. Is this your 1st time to AFC?
Jiten: Ya! This is my 1st time to AFC. It’s great you can learn so many things and get to know what are the latest training like TRX, Kettlebell Training and you have the opportunity to learn all the latest things under one roof.

FIT: Before I move on can you tell me more about you?
Jiten: I’m Jiten, I’m from India and I’m ACE Certified, ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and Reebok Certified Aerobic Cum Gym Instructor. I’m now a freelance personal trainer in my homeland India. My plan is to set up my own personal training studio by end of 2011.

FIT: Do you think that it’s important for trainer to participate in such convention?
Jiten: Ya! They should come because you can learn new things here and you will get to know what is happening in the world of fitness now for example TRX, Kettlebell, Pilates, speed & agility training and a lot of different training available over here. You can attend the specific workshop accordingly to your area of specialty.

FIT: You have a few certifications in you do you agree with me it’s important for trainers to obtain certifications accredited by NCCA?
Jiten: Ya, every trainer should complete at least basic fitness certification accredited by NCCA to gain the knowledge of what to do and what not to do to maintain the standard of safety because every exerciser may face the risk of getting injury if they are not being guide the right way. Trainers should have the knowledge of biomechanics, kinesiology and physiology so that you can implement a personalised exercise program so that they can achieve their goal without any injury.

FIT: Do you see any difference between trainers in your country and SEA?
Jiten: I’m from India I can tell you about fitness in India. There are very few certifications in India but trainers in India are aware of the importance of certifications. I’m not sure about trainers in Malaysia, Singapore or Thailand but I would suggest/advise it’s important to obtain a fitness certification if you don’t because you will know your capability and where you stand. Your clients may come with different goals and different health conditions (special populations, lower back pain, older adults etc.) hence with the knowledge you are able to train them properly.

FIT: Can you share with me who are your clients?
Jiten: I work with youth, healthy adults and also special populations clients who are suffering from cardiovascular disease.

FIT: Anything you would like to add on before I end this conversation?
Jiten: Ya! I would like to send this message to every trainer, get yourself certified, learn everything. Bear in mind that certification does not mean everything, you need to upgrade yourself year by year, month by month or day by day because everyday many researches has been done by different institution, if any exercise is being banned or being modified you have to know for your clients safety.
