Simran Latif, BASc (Human Movement), AAESS, C.S.C.S.

FIT: Can you tell me more about you and your career?
Simran: I am an Aries, a Euro-Malay ecto-mesomorph who has a sweet tooth and likes lifting heavy stuff sometimes. Thanks to my many years in Australia, I like the outdoors and also the occasional barbecue. I hold a Bachelors degree in Human Movement, which is code word for exercise science, from the University of South Australia. Career-wise, I started in the Health Promotion industry back in South Australia after i graduated as a traveling Health Consultant, conducting 1:1 health assessments on polite council employees and also big, round-bellied Mining workers. Other odd jobs that I have done is University gym trainer (UniSA), Tutor, Fitness Manager (Fitness First Malaysia), Fitness Training Coordinator (Fitness First Malaysia) and most recently proud Father.

FIT: Share with us your job now?
Simran: I am now, on most days, the Program Director-cum-Lead Trainer for Original Bootcamp Sdn Bhd, the first military-inspired bootcamp conditioning program to hit our shores last year, both in KL and PJ. I am also a free-lance CSCS professional training urban warriors to get fit and functional in gym condos around Bangsar and Hartamas. I’m also training fitness professional at FIT Malaysia.

FIT: Were you certified when you started?
Simran: Well, I had my degree to start off with when i came back to Malaysia, but with very minimal personal training experience.

FIT: 3 things you learnt most by `getting certified’…
Simran: 1.That having a generalist exercise degree helps to provide the foundation knowledge, but you still need to get certified to learn the more important things when it comes to training. 2, being certified means that you are recognised for being a professional in the fitness field. 3, that the cup is always half empty, and that you learn new things when you get certified.

FIT: How did you keep up with the fitness industry?
Simran: I do A LOT of reading of Fitness Blogs and materials by industry giants in the US, like Eric Cressey, Alwyn Cosgrove, Robert dos Romedios, Jason Ferrugia. These are highly-skilled CSCS practitioners who have been perfecting the art of training clients for years, so I read up a lot on what they do and experiment on myself to see if it makes sense. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

FIT: Who are your clientele?
Simran: I train pregnant women, Middle-aged executives and also large groups of teenagers for sports conditioning.

FIT: Describe your own training routine?

Simran: I have what you call training ADD. Right now, I’m into doing CrossFit training because of the functional variety, and I throw in a couple of heavy lifts here and there. I like doing push-ups, and i’m trying to get my pull-ups to be better than that of an 11 year old.

FIT: Share your training philosophy?
Simran: Great question, I will give you an answer to that in 5 years. I think to come up with a training philosophy involves lots of trials and errors, and constantly trying to break plateaus. I don’t consider myself experienced enough to have a philosophy.

FIT: Word of advice for people making a career change into fitness…
Simran: Be passionate, train yourself as you would others, and don’y be shy!
