FIT: What is the feeling of being awarded the Men’s Health magazine’s Most Refined & Defined Man 2010?
Tava: It was awesome. At first I was content with all the modules that were being offered as part of the challenge as there was a lot to learn but when I was awarded the grand prize as “The Most Refined and Defined Man 2010” I was speechless.
This is because I felt greatly appreciated for all my hard work that I’ve put into changing myself. I feel completely satisfied with myself. And I can’t forget the look on my wife’s face with tears in her eyes, as she felt very proud that my determination to change myself was fruitful. Also let’s not forget the cheers from FIT gang!

FIT: Can you tell me more about you and your career?
Tava: I hold a BA (Hons) in Business and International Management and Diploma in Music Production. I have been a music producer for the past 12 years and run my own music production studio, “Booms Productionz”. But now I am a full-fledged freelance personal trainer.

FIT: Describe your own training routine
Tava: I workout at least 5 times a week. 3 days focused on strength training and couple more days for cardiovascular training. I also allocate time for my kickboxing classes 2-3 times a week and sometimes change my routine to rock climbing. Previously I lost about 30kgs of fat in 9 months.

FIT: How do you train your clients?
Tava: I conduct indoor and outdoor training for my clients so they don’t get bored with same old routine. I try my best to make it interesting and fun at the same time. I conduct 1-1 personal training as well as small group circuit training both indoors and outdoors.

FIT: What type of clients do you like to train?
Tava: I do not have any preference but I look forward to train clients who are really in need of help to jumpstart their health and fitness; and that’s what I call my fitness program “JumpStart – Your Way To Health & Fitness”. I was unhealthy and unfit for many years and since I have experienced the benefit of fitness training, I am confident that I can make a lifestyle change for my clients.

FIT: Describe how your fitness career started. What motivated you to get certified?
Tava: For 10 years I was very unhealthy, weak, and unfit. No doctors could help me with my ailment. It was a trouble to even work. Apart from these, my wife was hospitalized for dengue for the 2nd time and almost died. I got very frustrated when I could not even take care of her. It was a very sad point in my life. Determined to change, I joined a gym and started to work hard on my health. In nine months I lost 30kgs of fat and became very much more fit and healthy. I also pursued my dream of martial arts and attended kickboxing lessons and am proud to say that I’m in the 6th level (purple) out of 9 (black) now.

I had a great coach Anne Thorstensen (ACE certified). She is from Norway and is a great trainer who I look up to. She was the one who made me realise my potential as a trainer and encouraged me to do the ACE certification.

FIT: 3 things you learnt most by `getting certified’…
Tava: There are many important things that I learnt but to mention a few, the most important would be listening to the clients specific needs and goals, always ensure safety; and clients motivation and adherence which contributes to the success of their lifestyle change

FIT: How was the PT course you attended?
Tava: It was awesome and I loved all the facilitators. They were all professional and yet we had a fun learning experience. I gained much new knowledge about fitness which is helpful to me and also my clients.

FIT: How did you keep up with the fitness industry?
Tava: I usually do a lot of research online on various topics. Apart from that, I also follow-up closely on “Idea Fitness Journal for Ace Certified Professionals”. I also keep in touch with other personal trainers and health professionals.

FIT: Is there any other interest besides all these?
Tava: Being a personal trainer, health and fitness is the most important thing for me now and I am eager to create awareness through my JumpStart program to the community.

FIT: Word of advice for people making a career change into fitness…
FIT: I strongly encourage existing personal trainers and many others who are looking into the fitness career, to get certified to be a professional in this line. It is like getting a diploma or degree in a chosen profession. As a personal trainer, we have a professional responsibility towards others and furthermore being in the health and fitness industry we are actually gifted to help others. “Do not be afraid to make changes or to try anything new in your life”.
