We had our Essential Personal Trainer Course here at FiT Malaysia recently and here is an interview with one of our students, Cyrus Liew San Yin who passed the Essential Personal Trainer exam. Here in this interview, Cyrus shared about his passion for fitness and his journey in the fitness industry.

Can you tell me more about your background?

Cyrus: I used to do aircraft maintenance, construction, and now retail. I also play football recreationally and have been exercising prior to this to keep fit and lose weight.

What have you learned in the course?

Cyrus: I gained more confidence in doing weight training as I learned the correct technique and form to perform exercises. I now know that the more reps I do for weight training, the more I work on my muscular endurance; and that the hypertrophy phase consists of moderate reps range. Also, I now know the variables to calculate the heart rate, allowing me to vary the heart rate zones to meet specific fitness goals.

Does the EPT Certification add value to what you do now?

Cyrus: For starters, a commercial gym has approached me to work with them! I am now waiting to complete their fitness test, attend the interview and await the offer letter from them. I personally find the topic on heart rate zones very valuable. My previous fitness goal was to lose weight. After completing the EPT Course by Fit Malaysia, I am now able to use the knowledge learned about heart rate zones to further enhance fat loss. This would definitely be an advantage, allowing me to vary the programs I would give to my future clients especially when it comes to fat loss programs.

What are your plans after this?

Cyrus: My plan would definitely be to utilize the knowledge I have gained from the EPT course to train myself first to gain that first-hand experience; and to pass that information on to my future clients. I will be signing up for the PT PRO-Grade Workshop (NASM CPT Bridging) to study further about the fitness industry. The next step after the PT PRO-Grade Workshop would be to take the NASM CPT Exam or do the ACE Exam Review before taking the ACE PT Exam.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

Cyrus: I definitely see myself in the fitness industry in 5 years time. I am eager to meet other fitness professionals so I can learn more from them. In my personal opinion, we are all challengers and that there should not be any threats or competitors as we are all doing the same thing. We are all here for the same reason, our passion for fitness, hence we should all share our experiences and knowledge so we can learn and progress together.

Do you have any advice to give to the future trainers and someone who wants to step foot into the fitness industry?

Cyrus: You need to have passion in this. I started out with football before being a regular exerciser. I then wanted to know more about exercising so that I can improve myself in my exercises. It was then that I realized I love exercising and wanted this as a career, leading to my research on the internet for certification courses and found. In actual fact, FiT Malaysia found me. Once you have that passion, everything else will follow.
