From Family Business to Personal Training

Have you seen the February 2012 issue of Men’s Health Malaysia magazine? If you had, you will agree most men would want to be on Malaysia’s Hottest Hunk 2012 Jordan Yeoh’s position (literally). Once a chubby kid and who studied advertising & marketing, Jordan has left the mandate of running his family business to become a personal trainer. Now, the muscle bound & intensely chiselled machine, Jordan Yeoh, is an ACE-certified Personal Trainer, currently pursuing the ACE Advanced Health & Fitness Specialist certification, an ELITE level Personal Trainer at Get FiT (FiT Malaysia) and a model. Having the look every men would desire to possess, this down-to-earth superhero decides to share his training diary and secrets to his success.

Can you share your typical weekly workout?

I typically train 5-6 times per week spending 60-90mins every session. I normally work on muscle hypertrophy where the training is fairly intense, keeping the volume high with short rest time for greater muscle stimulations. I will complete my work-out with a short 20-30mins low-moderate intensity of 50-65% heart-rate reserve cardio after my weights on days where I train smaller muscle groups. This helps to keep my body fat % low all year long.

How do you get your six packs?

I got it not only from the gym, but mainly from the kitchen!

I monitor what goes into my body, eating clean and workout intensely with resistance 5-6 times per week for muscle hypertrophy. I do cardio training 2-5 times per week to burn stubborn fats. I do this all year long.

Understand that you are a personal trainer now, why did you decide to be one?

I enjoy helping the one who are seeking for help. Just like superheroes saving peoples, I wish I could do something similar with my own capacity. I have deep passion in fitness, so I have decided to be one of the superhero that I’ll be able to cast superpowers to people becoming fitter, muscular, sexier, stronger and healthier… but in hard and interesting way. 😉

What top 3 qualities you think a personal trainer should possess?

In my opinion, positive impression is crucial for a personal trainer. The personal trainer should have vibrant & fit looking appearance, positive attitude & professional working behaviour. We are our client’s fitness role model.

What was your previous job? Why did you change job?

I was helping my family business after I have graduated from college and also some part time jobs. My previous working life was never consistent until I pursue my passion and here I am, proudly working in the fitness/modeling industry.

Understand you took the Personal Trainer course from FiT & now you are ACE certified. What have you learned that helps you in your practice now? Top 3 things

Importance of building rapport with clients, effective coaching based on their goal and preference and designing a safe and effective program based on the client’s fitness and health conditions.

You are now an Elite level personal trainer at Get FiT (FiT Malaysia), what will be your typical day like?

I start my day by reviewing my to-do-list, cook my meals, drive to work, workout, train all my determined clients, do my own dishes & laundry, surf the net, plan for tomorrow, and go to bed. Cycle repeats! But as an Elite PT now, I have to bring the game up to the next level!

Apart from financial contribution, what do you find great/satisfactory about training clients?

The positive outcome of the client. A simple workout improvement such as their improved training techniques could cheer me up. The greatest satisfactory that I have in coaching would be the improvement of their health and the changes of their physiques! This require dedication & patience from both client and trainer to help change the client’s lifestyle.

Do you have a specific type of clients that you train? If yes, why you chose that specialization?

At the moment, inspiring clients on body transformation is my forte. Most of my clients had similar goals such as muscle building and fat loss, but they have lifestyle & health barriers that keep them away from their goals. I came from the bodybuilding field; a lifestyle sport about behaviour modification, muscularity, muscle bulk, symmetry and proportion. I have achieved this without the usage of anabolic steroids hence I am game to help them.

How do you find your career now?

You get paid to do something you love; you need not drag your feet to work. Hey, that is a dream job for many! I am living it!

What word of advice would you provide others who are thinking of making a career change into fitness now?

You might be one of the potential people to bring up the fitness industry. Follow your passion and give it a try. You will only miss 100% chances, if you never try.
