At 21 years old, Eric has already landed himself with the career of his dream, being a personal trainer with Get FiT (the largest ACE Certified network in Malaysia). Eric, who used to be a skinny kid, is now tall, cute (looks like Stuart Little to us), muscle-bound, lean and definitely available to girls. He comes with many years of experience in fitness, has earned the ACE Personal Trainer Certification last year, has trained FLY FM DJ Hafiz and now training the Men’s Health Malaysia Editor.

We decided to get up close & personal with Eric to discover what is the secret to his success…

How would you advice an exerciser who wants to lose body fat and gain muscle at the same time?

As a fitness professional/ personal trainer, I’d definitely suggest the RiP&FiT programme. It is a scientific based programming which puts metabolic training, bodybuilding programming & cardiovascular programming under one roof. It saves time, you build muscle without getting too bulky, and you lose body fat at the same time. Most importantly, I would advice my clients to stick to the regime of practicing a healthy eating habit and being active throughout the day. In other words, start exercising! Gain muscle and lose fat at the same time, it’s possible! But a lot of quality hard work needs to be done! Magic pills is not applicable.

You look like you are ready to compete in a bodybuilding show. What’s your training programme like now?

Simple routine. I eat right and workout 5 to 6 times a week of both cardio and resistance training.

I understand you helped Jerrican CSCS to train FLY FM DJ Hafiz across the last 4 months. How was the experience?

It’s a pleasure of me training Hafiz. I really enjoyed myself training clients like him. I’d say he’s a tough son of a gun! He executed the workout perfectly and he gained couple of kilos of lean muscle mass and dropping 5% of body fat in such a short period of time! If he can do it, so can anyone! Overall, both trainer and client are happy with the results because of exercising and eating right! Now that’s accomplishment!

You have been given the opportunity to `torture’ Men’s Health Malaysia Editor through `Get FiT Tone Up programme’. Are you excited?

Very excited! He’s a descent fella with a strong mindset and heart towards exercising. Training clients like Gareth will always be fun and somewhat easier, since they are intrinsically motivated.

What’s your hope on Gareth?

My hope on Gareth would be him achieving his fitness goal, that is to lose weight. Besides shredding the numbers on the scale, I certainly look forward of him to become fitter and stronger. And improvements on he’s left ankle mobility and overall coordination/ balance.

You did the preparation course for the ACE Personal Trainer Certification last year with FiT Malaysia. What have you learned that has helped you in your practice now?

Upon taking the ACE Personal Trainer course and getting certified, I’ve learned how to train someone in a way that is safe and yet effective. Besides training clients, I’ve also learned the science and facts behind exercising which is pretty interesting and useful. And oh! I’ve also learned how to communicate with clients and others better, because I used to suck at building rapports with people. Overall, FIT Malaysia and the course has helped me build my career, and I’m glad I took up the course.

So, what’s your current job now?

I’m a mobile personal trainer. Besides going mobile, I’m a semi-gym instructor for FIT from 4pm to 10pm.

You became a personal trainer without finishing college which is out of the norm of every 17-21 years old kid would do. If we compare you and your peers, you must have chosen a different pathway. What are they doing now and what’s your feeling of being different from them?

Most of the people I know, they are either studying or working for some company which they don’t really enjoy themselves. And I must say, I have zero regrets on dropping out of my college to become a personal trainer, which I did!  And I’m proud of what I am doing now and I love my job!

What would be your word of advice for someone who would like to follow your foot-steps?

Be confident and humble in what you do. It’s very tough at the beginning, but it’ll be over before you know it. Besides, if your passion is strong in this industry, rest assure that hard work will be paid off! And I would certainly encourage you to make FIT Malaysia the place you get help if you want to get started in the industry, as a fitness professional.
